Title

Multi-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics

Prerequisites

Fluid Mechanics, Numerical Methods

Goal of the course

Skilled selection and validation of multi-dimensional models of Computational Fluid Dynamics

Content

Teaching of founded knowledge about the methods, the mathematical/physical fundamentals and the application of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Turbulent single and multi-phase flows will be covered.
Based on computational examples from nuclear technology the methods of numerical flow simulation will be discussed in a systematic manner. In the theory part the derivation of the multi-dimensional conservation equations and boundary conditions as well as their simplifications will be performed. Furthermore, the subject of the course are fundamentals of numerical discretization as well as the numerical analysis (stability and convergence) of various discretization methods in the framework of the finite volume method. The various turbulence and multi-phase models are derived in comparison with the direct simulation and large-eddy simulation and discussed in view of their applicability for various flow examples. Finally the most important quality aspects and methods for error control (verification and validation) are presented.
