Title

Monte Carlo criticality and shielding calculations

Prerequisites

Principles of reactor and radiation physics

Goal of the course

To learn the use of a state-of-the-art Monte Carlo code for criticality and shielding calculations and understand the underlying principles

Content

Theory
Lectures are given on the theoretical background including the Monte Carlo method for particle transport simulations and the underlying nuclear physics and models utilized with this approach. The implementation in a Monte Carlo code is presented on the example of the state-of-the art Monte Carlo code MCNP including physics modelling, particle tracking, various simulation techniques, the geometry set-up and the definition of estimators for the evaluation of nuclear responses.
Training
Tutorials and exercises are given to introduce the use of MCNP, the modelling of a critical and a shielding assembly, and performing criticality and shielding calculations on selected test cases. The course participants will learn, step by step, to create an MCNP input file, set up the model, define the required parameters, run MCNP calculations and evaluate specific nuclear responses.
