Title

Computational Fluid Dynamics with Open-Source software

Prerequisites

Basics of fluid dynamics and numerics

Goal of the course

Introduction to computational fluid dynamics with OpenFOAM: Learn the use of existent solvers and utilities as well as the extension and modification of solvers for own simulation purposes

Content

The course provides the basics of computational fluid dynamics with the open-source C++ library OpenFOAM.
The topics that are covered:

  • Introduction to OpenFOAM, basic structure, models, solvers, utilities, discretisation schemes
  • Basic sequence of a simulation using OpenFOAM, grid generation, processing, evaluation, visualization
  • Generation of block- structured grids using the utility blockMesh
  • Application of the main flow solvers: laminar, turbulent, stationary, nonstationary, incompressible, with/without heat transfer
  • Postprocessing tools e.g. averaging, determination of forces, probing, sampling
  • Compilation of own solvers and boundary conditions

The course is organized as a practical computer course where each attendant individually works on simulation exercises (computers are provided).
