Course

Title

thermohydraulic stability analysis

Prerequisites

fundamentals of fluid dynamics

Goal of the course

Concept and tools for the analysis of the stability behavior in thermohydraulic applications.

Content

Increasing a control parameter of a thermohydraulic system, (e.g. heating power), the initial flow pattern (e.g. stationary flow) can be replaced by a different pattern (e.g. time periodic oscillations).
Typical hydrodynamic instabilities are summarized in the course.
The systematic analysis of thermohydraulic stability problems is developed for the case of Rayleigh-Bernard convection. The methods "linear stability analysis", "numerical eigenvalue analysis", and "nonlinear reduced order modeling" are introduced.
As an example from nuclear technology, density wave oscillations in the fuel assembly of a boiling water reactor are discussed extensively.
