Title

Two-phase flow in one-dimensional system codes

Prerequisites

Fundamentals of numerical fluid mechanics; code development with MATLAB

Goal of the course

Numerical algorithms modelling two-phase flow in system codes

Content

This advanced course introduces into numerical algorithms solving the time-dependent balance equations of mass, momentum and energy of a flow of liquid and steam in tubes. It includes in particular:

  • The homogeneous equilibrium flow model and its applications.
  • Homogeneous flow in thermal or mechanical non-equilibrium.
  • The drift flux model for bubbly flow.
  • The separate flow model with 6 balance equations for general predictions of two-phase flow.
  • Critical mass flow with sonic velocity of two-phase flow through nozzles and valves.
  • Dynamic effects of two-phase flow.

The course includes exercises with the open source code 2PFKIT, a simple one-dimensional MATLAB code, which allows studying latest methods describing two-phase flow.
